Committees’ Action Plans & Goals

Academic Affairs:

The Academic Affairs Committee works on projects that pertain to classes, professors, and other academic topics. It is a great opportunity to serve on one of the most productive committees, help out on any of our 20+ projects, and work with veteran SA members.

Current projects include...

  • Course Guide improvements
  • Student Helpline
  • Experimental classroom feedback
  • Student-Faculty Brunch
  • Committee on Standards (College judiciary) reform

Diversity and Community:

The Diversity and Community Affairs Committee is dedicated to building connections between student groups and to raising issues of diversity that concern all of the campus community.

Goals for this year include pushing for the hiring of faculty in the African and African American Studies Program to replace the faculty that have been lost in the past year. We also want to continue the Pangea Program, which puts selected groups together from all over campus to work on a project that fits with all of the groups' mission statements. We also plan to follow up with the Dean's Office on a report we published in the Winter of 2007, on minority faculty retention at Dartmouth College.

Student Services:

Student Services is the committee whose primary goal is to create and maintain a wide variety of innovative services for the undergraduate student body. If you want to join a committee where you can have a quick and lasting effect on the campus and your peers, then this is the committee for you. Some projects we will be working on will include student legal services, upper-class advising, and housing guides. We have many more great ideas and are looking forward to hearing yours as well. We hope you will join us!

The Student Services Committee is dedicated to working on the availability of services to Dartmouth students - everything from Greenprint stations to the cable TV lineup. Our goal is to learn what students would like to see available to them and then to collaborate with the administration to have that service implemented on campus. Just a few of our many upcoming projects for the '07-'08 year include a Digital Document Management system, additional Greenprint terminals, and a centralized lost and found system.

Ivy Council:

Ivy Council (is a subcommittee under Student Life)
Chairs: Joe Debonis and Katy Whisenhunt
Ivy Council is an Ivy-wide organization that seeks to foster communication between the student governments of Ivy League institutions. Dartmouth can use Ivy Council for problem solving and policy decisions by seeking advice from other schools. It holds three conferences per year which a delegation from Dartmouth attends, one of which is the Ivy Leadership Summit held every February at Columbia University. The other two conferences rotate between schools in the fall and spring. This fall's conference will be held at Yale. Ivy Council also has a community service division, called IvyCORPS, which seeks to hold Ivy-wide fundraisers. Ivy Council helps coordinate Ivy wide projects such as the launching of RISK, an online game that will host a tournament at the end of October between all the Ivy League schools.

Treasurer: Nathan Bruschi ‘10

Hi everyone, I'm Nathan Bruschi and as Treasurer of the Assembly I will be managing our finances. While my job exists outside of the committees, I hope to work closely with the VPs on their initiatives. As Secretary of the Assembly last year, I was involved in a number of projects that I hope to finish, including the mascot campaign, constitution revision, and the Dartmouth Wiki. As far as general goals for the coming year, I have seen that SA is most successful in pioneering new student services and then turning them over to the college. The College Readership Program (which provides those free newspapers around campus) is our latest of these initiatives. In creating more programs that students actually use, we can help make SA more important in the eyes of the students and imporve the quality of life for everyone at the college.

I am also the administrator of the Student Assemblog (DartmouthSA.blogspot.com), a source of information, news and commentary about student government. If any of you would like to become a blog contributor, please contact me.

Executive Assistant & Alumni Affairs Liaison: Bonnie Lam ‘10

Alumni Affairs (subcommittee) will connect the student population to the alumni body through various different programs. We hope to strengthen the relationship between current students and alumni.

Upcoming projects/goals:
Student- Alumni Housing

  • Alums could host a student in his/her home or perhaps offer recommended housing during a student's off-term
  • Future Actions
    • Meet with Alumni Office to set up an online link on the YADA website for Alumni specifically to list housing available in there area's or work
    • Research more schools that help set up Alumni-Student Housing
    • Generate a list of interested alumni to contact especially in the Washington DC, NY, and Boston area

Student Alumni Link (SALs)

  • A program that links students to their respective alumni clubs
  • Keeps alums updated on campus life
  • Helps club in organizing events with students.
  • Through SALs, SA will also be connected to the Alumni.

Moose Mascot

  • Keep the alumni involved in the ongoing process of debuting an official mascot
  • Future Action
    • Possibly send a letter about the Moose to alumni after receiving positive feedback

Parliamentarian: Jaromy Siporen ‘08

One of the most important activities of the assembly is the healthy debate that takes place on many legislative issues at our weekly general assembly meetings. As Parliamentarian, I work with other officers to ensure that this process is done in a structured and efficient way. I also have the duty of interpreting the constitution if any issues arise and reviewing legislation to ensure its purpose meets our goals as an organization. With the recent critical examination of both the past years leadership, and the Assembly as a whole, I look forward to playing a critical role in how many recent changes to the constitution will hopefully steward SA in a new, more efficient, and more productive direction.
