ASA (Alliance for Socioeconomic Awareness)

General Info

Mission:
Based on the balanced principles of discourse and action, ASA works to provide a safe, open, and educational space for discussion and support surrounding issues of socioeconomic status and its role in the formation of our individual identities.
About:
We're a new organization on campus that was formed in response to the lack of focused discussion around issues of socio-economic class and the class divide. . . . Our main goals are centered around EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, and AWARENESS. We have bimonthly open discussions in Collis 212. Past conversation topics include: Funding at Dartmouth; Off-terms; Issues of Access; Class and the Dartmouth Experience. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Some of our current projects: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . -- Setting up a student liason system with the Financial Aid office, so financial aid recipients can have a peer resource to go to with questions about work study, transfer terms, living off campus, and the like. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . -- Encouraging professors to make their course textbooks available in the Library Reserves and include clauses in their syllabi encouraging those working more than 20 hours per week to notify the professor (as one would with a relevant disability or regular sports team committments). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . -- Increasing discourse between students and professors about how socio-economic class affects and informs our Dartmouth experiences, via a termly professor-student panel and an online, anonymous wiki. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . -- Consolidating sources of funding at Dartmouth into a format that is most convenient for those who need it most, and allowing open access to this folder of resources on our website. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
